The Fun Theory Award Winner – The Speed Camera Lottery

Idea: Rewarding Speed Limit Signs – Submitted by Kevin Richardson (USA)

Can we get more people to obey the speed limit by making it fun to do? The idea here is capture on camera the people who keep to the speed limit. They would have their photos taken and registration numbers recorded and entered into a lottery. Winners would recieve cash prizes and be notified by post. Better still, the winning pot would come from the people who were caught speeding.

@aHIGHasian That wouldn’t work because you would most likely end up on a blacklist which may last for the whole current lottery duration which prevents you from ever being randomly selected until the next lottery.

i guess Kevin thinks *statutory* law is the law of the land. I think it’s a good idea, actually. They would have to post a sign that says *Obey the law and you could WIN* with a website at the bottom that they could look at for the details or something like that, THEN people would do it. I doubt they’d do it otherwise. XD I know if I were to come across it though, I’d pass the thing as often as possible just to have more chances. lol!

A nice idea, but unless there is a very good chance of winning the money, it won’t work. So to make it work, all slow drivers should win (if there is e.g. at least $1000 in the pot, paid for by the fast drivers that preceded the slow driver). So the fines of the fast drivers keep adding up, and as soon as it reaches $1000, the next slow driver that passes the camera wins it.

Whilst the initial concept is reasonable, this would be financially unworkable in the UK for there are vast areas where there are no digitally connected static cameras. Would a speeding driver be exempt at one site due to speeding, then entered into the lottery at the next due to a qualifying speed?

Ooooh I have a fun theory idea!!! Lets take fingerprints of all the pedestrians on the sidewalk and enter their photos and fingerprints into a huge government database and sometimes we will send out a small check to the lottery winners.

Tax the behavior you want to discourage (speeding) and reward the bevavior you want to encourage (safe driving). Old concept with a great spin. Would be nice to finally get paid for being a goody two shoes. The word of mouth would spread like wildfire if one person in any neighborhood got a check in the mail for driving slowly through a school zone. Better yet, those who are texting while driving can pay fines that reward those who are driving without. Don’t want a ticket? Don’t break the law.

Love the idea. To make it work you need to find the optimal prize level so people feel like it’s ‘worth’ it not to speed. Frequent low paying prizes like $5 might not be as good as less frequent $100 prizes. But $100 prizes (1/1000 cars) might incentivize people more than 1/1,000,000 cars winning $100,000. My guess is that 1/2000 cars worth $150 to $200 is ideal.
