I suspect they mistakenly thought they could preserve their anonymity by redeeming the ticket through a trust. A lot of states have abandoned that pledge of anonymity. They say it’s because the public has a right to know who winners are. The real reason? Lottery commissions want to milk as much free publicity as they can out of winners. So, after they redeemed the ticket, the lottery commission told them, “Sorry, but we have to reveal your names anyway and make you endure a public press conference where you hold up an oversized check.”
Just once, I’d like to see a jackpot like this redeemed by a diehard miser (grin) who says at a press conference, “All you friends, relatives, and charities expecting a piece of my pie can forget about it. This money is MINE, all MINE, hehehehe!”
