22-23/3/2010: Synthetic Plant Organelle Workshop
28/9/2009: SPPI-Net Workshop - Improving Plants for Industrial Applications: a synthetic biology approach
Institute for Physics, 76 Portland Place, London
The second SPPI Net workshop was held at the Institute of Physics, 76 Portland Place, London on September 28th 2009. The workshop built on the outputs from the first SPPI-Net workshop to establish plant science areas for development of activities in synthetic biology. The September 28th workshop represented the first of a number of smaller, targeted workshop that aim to develop new research projects and collaborations between UK academic groups and industry and focus on strategic areas of benefit to the UK which build upon the strong science-base across plant and crop sciences, microbiology, biochemistry, the physical sciences and engineering. The September 28th workshop focussed on identifying new projects using synthetic biology to:
- Improve biofuels production
- Produce high-value products for industry
- Develop useful agronomic traits in crops
- Develop new technologies for crop improvement
13-14/1/2009: SPPI-NET First Workshop
Collingwood College, Durham University
In 2008 several networks in synthetic biology (NSBs) were announced to stimulate research activity in this newly emerging science. One of these NSBs, SPPI-NET has the objective of developing the capacity in the UK to use synthetic biology approaches to derive novel plant products for industrial applications in the future. The activities of SPPI-NET are linked to those of GARNet as well as the Bioscience for Business knowledge transfer network which has strong links with industry.
The objective of the workshop is to establish plant science areas for development of activities in synthetic biology, form networks for future research activities, consider the social science implications of this emerging technology in crop science and beyond and form links with other NSBs. This is an open workshop to all GARNet members and UK researchers (plant sciences, chemists, modellers, process engineers) and a meeting programme and registration details will be posted here from Monday 22th September. If you are interested in learning more about the network or its activities please contact Rob Edwards, Centre for Bioactive Chemistry, Durham University (Robert.edwards@durham.ac.uk).
